SGMA National Health Through Fitness Day (NHTF Day) is the culmination of a year round effort by the SGMA and its many sponsors and volunteers to pass major U.S. legislation to “Get America Moving”.
For the past 10 years, the SGMA has brought people together in Washington, D.C. to accomplish our goals. Approximately 100 leaders from the sports, fitness, and PE industries meet in early March to lobby Congress to pass key legislation which will help our country overcome a major epidemic, obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Other attendees include company representatives from the food and beverage industry. This past year we had over 80 meetings with U.S. Senators and Representatives, plus an additional 32 meetings with key Congressional staff members.
Ed Kasanders, of Exergame Fitness says, “We are proud to support SGMA’s Day of Health and Fitness. This falls directly in line with everything Motion Fitness tries to do by keeping people active and moving, while motivating individuals who live sedentary lifestyles. I would hope all organizations out there can see how this great cause can effect not only the overweight population of today, but future generations as well.”
Each year 15-20 sports celebrities such as Herschel Walker, Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, Peyton Manning and Tim Brown come to Washington DC to help our cause. They are brought to NHTF Day by major companies such as Nike, Under Armour, Reebok, Prince, Everlast, and Gatorade.
The present key legislation the SGMA is focused on for NHTF Day is the Carol White Physical Education for Progress Act (PEP) and the Personal Health Investment Today Bill (PHIT). Both of these initiatives will help “Get America Moving” and help overcome the obesity crisis.
While NHTF Day is held in early March, the SGMA’s efforts to pass key legislation is a year round effort. Besides having a lobby firm to help with our efforts, SGMA has year round staff dedicated to finding ways to influence Capitol Hill activities and legislation. National Health Through Fitness Day is a great day for our country. We are using our resources to help kids and adults lead more active and healthy lifestyles.
