How Exergaming Is Helping the YMCA of Greater Birmingham Bridge the Gap in Teen Fitness and Family Engagement
At the Hoover YMCA, part of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham, innovation is taking center stage in youth programming. Kristin Harris, the Executive Director, recently shared how their decision to integrate exergaming has started to reshape how teens and families engage with the YMCA. Her insight highlights how technology, movement, and fun can come together to create lasting impact.
“We were really looking to fill a gap in our teen programming,” said Harris. “And exergaming does exactly that.”
For many YMCAs, engaging teens can be a challenge—especially when traditional programming like group fitness or sports doesn’t always appeal to this age group. By introducing exergaming, the YMCA has tapped into what teens already love—technology and gaming—and fused it with physical activity in a way that feels natural, exciting, and relevant.
“Gamifying fitness is a huge part of how we reach teens,” Harris explained. “They walk into the space and instantly connect with the lights, the energy, and the interactive games. It doesn’t feel like exercise—it feels like fun.”
Exergaming transforms traditional fitness into immersive, tech-powered activities that challenge the body while engaging the brain. Whether it’s reaction walls, interactive cycling, or full-body gaming systems, teens are moving, sweating, and most importantly—enjoying the process.
But the benefits don’t stop with teens. Harris noted a key outcome that has resonated deeply with families:
“It gives parents a reason to bring their kids to the Y again,” she said. “They can go work out or take a class, while their kids are having just as much fun in a safe, active environment.”
This multi-generational appeal is critical. Many parents want their children to be active but struggle to find activities that compete with screen time. Exergaming meets kids where they are—through technology—but redirects that screen time into meaningful movement. It also fosters a sense of community, with kids often working together, competing in teams, or cheering each other on during gameplay.
At its core, the YMCA has always been about building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Exergaming is simply the next evolution of that mission. It supports youth development, encourages healthy habits, and creates inclusive opportunities for physical activity in a space where everyone—regardless of fitness level—can feel successful.
As Harris summarized, “It’s been a game-changer—literally and figuratively.”
For YMCAs looking to strengthen their teen engagement, elevate their wellness programs, and offer more for families, exergaming is proving to be a powerful solution—one that moves bodies, sparks minds, and brings communities together.
