Technology is often viewed as something that competes with physical activity. At Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama, however, technology is being used to inspire movement.
Through support from a Meta Data Center Community Action Grant, Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama was able to introduce a complete Exergaming room at one of its newer Club locations. The space combines interactive technology, physical activity, gaming, and social engagement through equipment including the iWall, HeavyBall, runBEAT, and Exerbikes.
The result is more than a technology room or traditional fitness area. It is an active environment where Club members can challenge themselves, play alongside friends, and experience exercise in a format that feels familiar and exciting.
Using Technology for Community Impact
Meta’s Data Center Community Action Grants support schools, nonprofit organizations, and community projects that use technology for community benefit, help build strong and sustainable communities, or improve STEAM education.
The Exergaming room at Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama is a strong example of how those goals can come together.
Instead of asking young people to choose between technology and physical activity, the room combines the two. Screens, sensors, interactive challenges, and game-based feedback become tools that encourage kids to run, pedal, squat, react, and work together.
That approach complements the Club’s broader commitment to providing young people with a safe, fun, and challenging environment. Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama offers programming in areas such as STEM, sports, art, academics, budgeting, and career preparation, helping Club members build skills for the real world.
Exergaming adds another dimension to that mission by demonstrating that technology can be active, social, and connected to healthy lifestyles.
Making Physical Activity Feel Like Play
One of the biggest advantages of Exergaming is its ability to reach young people who may not immediately connect with traditional fitness activities.
Not every child is interested in organized sports, weight training, or conventional exercise. Interactive fitness gives those Club members another entry point. The activity is presented as a game, but the movements can develop cardiovascular endurance, coordination, balance, strength, agility, and reaction time.
Because many games provide immediate visual feedback, scores, timed challenges, and opportunities to try again, kids are naturally encouraged to remain involved. They can compete against their own previous score, challenge a friend, or work together as part of a group.
Exergame’s youth-focused room concept is designed to use gamification to encourage movement, fitness, and social interaction among kids and teens. The equipment can also be organized into challenges, open-play activities, or circuit-style group programming.
Inside the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama Exergaming Room
The room includes several different Exergaming experiences, giving Club staff the flexibility to offer a variety of activities.
iWall: Your Body Becomes the Controller
The iWall uses motion-sensing technology to place players directly inside the game. Instead of controlling the action with a traditional joystick, kids move their bodies to run, jump, balance, and respond to what is happening on the screen.
The system offers individual and multiplayer games, making it useful for independent challenges, partner activities, and friendly competition. Different game experiences can emphasize endurance, mobility, coordination, strength, or balance.
For Club members who already enjoy video games, the iWall creates an easy connection between something familiar and something active.
HeavyBall: Strength, Movement, and Reaction
HeavyBall combines a weighted medicine ball with illuminated targets. Players identify the lighted opening, lift and place the ball into it, retrieve the ball, and quickly move to the next target.
The repeated pattern encourages squatting, lifting, lateral movement, coordination, and cardiovascular activity. The game can move at the participant’s pace, allowing staff to adjust the challenge for different ages and ability levels.
HeavyBall can also be used for individual score challenges, partner activities, and team-based competition.
runBEAT: Turning Cardio Into Competition
runBEAT transforms treadmill exercise into a visual group experience. Participants can walk, jog, run, or sprint through digital race environments while following their progress on a large display.
The system can support gaming options, warmups, interval workouts, running challenges, and competitions. Different distances and activity levels allow staff to adapt the experience to the needs of the group.
Instead of simply asking a young person to spend time on a treadmill, runBEAT gives the activity a goal, a visual destination, and an added social component.
Exerbikes: Pedal to Play
Exerbikes connect stationary cycling with video gaming through pedal-to-play technology. Club members can enjoy a gaming experience while remaining physically active on the bike.
The concept helps turn traditionally sedentary screen time into active participation. Young people are still interacting with technology and games, but they are also pedaling, building endurance, and remaining engaged in continuous movement.
The bikes include adjustable seating and resistance options, allowing the experience to accommodate a range of users.
Creating More Ways for Kids to Participate
A complete Exergaming room gives Boys & Girls Club staff multiple programming possibilities.
The equipment can be used during after-school programming, summer camps, teen activities, healthy-lifestyle initiatives, structured fitness circuits, special events, and open recreation periods. Staff can create individual challenges, partner competitions, team relays, or rotations that keep larger groups involved.
That flexibility is especially valuable in a Club environment, where young people may have different ages, interests, confidence levels, and physical abilities.
Some participants may be motivated by improving a score. Others may enjoy competing with friends, learning a new game, or simply trying an activity they have never experienced before. Exergaming creates room for each of those motivations.
A Partnership Built Around Innovation
The Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama Exergaming room demonstrates what can happen when community investment, youth development, fitness, and technology come together.
Meta’s support helped make advanced interactive technology available to local young people. Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama provided the trusted environment, caring staff, and youth programming needed to turn that technology into meaningful experiences. Exergame Fitness helped transform the available space into an active room designed around movement, gaming, and engagement.
Together, those elements have created a space where technology does not pull kids away from physical activity—it invites them into it.
For Boys & Girls Clubs looking for new ways to engage today’s young people, Exergaming offers an opportunity to meet kids through something they already understand and enjoy while introducing movement, teamwork, confidence, and healthy competition.
