January is always the busiest time of year for gyms. You might say it’s the Black Friday month for them. A lot of the business gyms get in January have to do with the fact too many people stuff themselves over the holiday season.
You might be guilty of that as well. It all starts Thanksgiving Day with the tradition of seeing how much turkey you can stuff down your throat followed by chasers of mashed potatoes and gravy and pumpkin pie.
And it doesn’t end there. Typically, December finds kitchen all around the United States filled with yuletide treats of all types. By the time December 26 rolls around, you need to resolve to lose some weight in the new year. By January 2nd, you are all too eager to hit the gym and engage in interactive fitness provided by Exergame.
But here is where the problem lies; you might hit the gym once or twice, but you quickly lose interest and break your resolution by February. So here are a few foolproof strategies to stick to your New Year’s resolutions.
Make Your Resolutions Manageable
Your New Year’s resolutions should be a fantasy. There is really no way you are going to drop 40 pounds in one month or bench press a ridiculous amount of weight. These things just don’t happen overnight.
Don’t set yourself up to fail, make goals that are actually attainable. Look, it’s fine if ultimately you want to lose 40 pounds, but do so over the course of several months. Make it a goal to lose three or four pounds a month and if you happen to lose six, then that makes you feel really good about yourself.
The key to sustainable resolutions is making small changes over a period of time. It’s like training for a marathon, you never want to go out and run five miles all at once, start off in half-mile increments and work up from there.
Write it Down and Measure it Up
Your New Year’s resolutions should be both measurable and specific. Write down your specific goals and the exact steps you need to take to get there. Losing weight is a common resolution, but writing down “losing weight” isn’t really going to help you out.
Instead, write down that you are going to engage in active floor games twice a week an hour at a time, do a half hour of interactive climbing three times a week and spend three hours a week on a gaming bike. In doing this, you hope to lose at least three pounds a month.
Reward Yourself
When you do reach your goals, reward yourself with something that won’t set you back again. That is, if you lose three pounds the first month, don’t celebrate by slamming two Double Whoppers.
Instead, choose a reward that won’t endanger your hard work like a weekend getaway or go get a massage.
Ask for Help
There is no shame in asking a friend or family member to help you reach your goals. It is also quite acceptable to hire a personal trainer to get you through this.
