At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County, we know that physical activity is a cornerstone of healthy development. But getting kids off the couch and away from screens can be a challenge—until now. Thanks to the power of exergaming, we’ve transformed exercise into something every kid wants to do.
What Is Exergaming?
Exergaming combines the best of both worlds: video gaming and physical movement. Whether it’s dancing, biking, boxing, or engaging in virtual sports, exergaming turns what used to be “screen time” into “sweat time.” And the best part? Kids don’t even realize they’re working out—they’re just having fun.
A Space That’s Always Buzzing
Since we introduced exergaming to our Clubs, the response has been nothing short of incredible. It’s quickly become one of the most used spaces in the building, and for good reason. The lights, sounds, and fast-paced games draw kids in, but it’s the laughter, movement, and teamwork that keep them coming back. Every day, you’ll find kids of all ages and fitness levels in the exergaming room—dancing, competing, and cheering each other on.
Inclusive and Engaging for All
One of the biggest wins? Exergaming meets kids where they are. Whether a child is a seasoned athlete or brand new to physical activity, there’s something in the exergaming space that fits their comfort zone. It breaks down barriers to participation by focusing on fun first. There’s no pressure, no “last pick,” and no need for advanced skills—just an open invitation to move, play, and thrive.
Building Healthy Habits for Life
Beyond the excitement, exergaming is helping us plant the seeds for lifelong wellness. It introduces fitness in a way that feels natural and enjoyable, which is key to helping kids develop positive associations with exercise. And because it’s so popular, many of our Club members are now choosing active play over sedentary alternatives.
