Active or exercise-based video games offer several advantages over non-active video games, primarily related to physical health, mental stimulation, and social interaction. Recently Exergame was able to catch up with Sonya “Coach” Crider of the YMCA of Central Florida on the impact of interactive gaming at the Y.
One of the really interesting things to hear from Coach, was how the kids are now choosing more of the Active Video games, vs the In-Active video games! Here are some reasons why active games are considered better for overall well-being:
- Physical Activity: Active video games require players to move their bodies, promoting physical activity and helping combat sedentary lifestyles. Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, improving cardiovascular health, enhancing muscle strength and flexibility, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
- Improved Motor Skills: Active games often involve gestures, body movements, and coordination tasks that can enhance players’ motor skills, hand-eye coordination, balance, and spatial awareness. These improvements can be especially beneficial for children’s development but are also valuable for adults in maintaining their motor functions.
- Mental Stimulation: Many active games incorporate cognitive challenges such as problem-solving, strategic thinking, and quick decision-making. Engaging in these mental activities while being physically active can improve cognitive functions like memory, attention, and processing speed.
- Social Interaction: Some active games offer multiplayer options, encouraging social interaction and collaboration among players. This can lead to enhanced social skills, teamwork, communication abilities, and a sense of community, especially important for individuals who may be more introverted or have limited opportunities for socializing in person.
While non-active video games can also offer entertainment, storytelling, and cognitive challenges, incorporating active games into one’s gaming routine can provide additional health and wellness benefits, making them a preferred choice for those looking to combine leisure time with physical and mental stimulation.
