When opening a brand-new Boys and Girls Club, integrating exergaming as a core component offers multiple benefits that align with the club’s mission to promote youth development, health, and community engagement.
Recently we went out to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater High Point that opened their first brick and mortar club EVER! While BGC High Point was a previous owner of some of our Exergaming Mobile Solutions, the new club needed an “essential” Exergame space according to their President Floyd Johnson.
Here’s why exergaming should be prioritized:
1. Engagement Through Fun Physical Activity
Exergaming blends exercise with interactive gaming, making physical activity more enjoyable. Many children and teens are already drawn to gaming, and by introducing an active component, you’re turning a popular pastime into a health-promoting activity. This approach is particularly effective in reaching those who might not participate in traditional sports or fitness programs.
2. Inclusive Environment for All Skill Levels
Traditional physical activities, while valuable, can sometimes be intimidating for children who feel less athletic or less confident in group sports. Exergaming offers a welcoming alternative, as the games can be designed to accommodate varying skill levels and abilities, ensuring that everyone, regardless of fitness level or athletic background, can participate and enjoy themselves.
3. Supports Physical and Mental Health
Research has shown that regular physical activity can improve physical health, combat obesity, and enhance mental well-being. Exergaming keeps kids moving, increases cardiovascular health, and fosters a sense of achievement and enjoyment. Additionally, physical activity is linked to improvements in mood, focus, and academic performance, making exergaming a valuable tool for supporting well-rounded development.
